Update on the 2020 / 2021 Winter Season

Pembroke Youth Basketball (“PYB”) is committed to doing everything possible to ensure that we have a winter basketball season for the kids, and is moving forward with travel team tryouts and other winter season planning activities, in the hope that we will be able to play competitive games this winter.

This document is intended to help keep everyone informed on PYB activities related to the 2020 / 2021 winter season, and will be updated as more information becomes available.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to present challenges and there are many variables that are outside of PYB’s control at this point:

  • We are not sure if PYB will be able to use the Pembroke school gyms for practices and games during the winter season
  • Youth travel leagues are working on contingency plans for the winter season, but they are restricted by the current Massachusetts guidance and limited school gym availability, so their contingency plans are not yet finalized

Winter Season Options

PYB normally has two different options for the winter season:

  • Travel program (boys & girls in grades 3 – 8)
  • In-Town Recreational program (boys & girls in grades 2 – 9)

Please click HERE for additional information to the programs we offer.

PYB is hoping to have both of these options available for the 2020 / 2021 winter season, but we are not yet sure what these options will look like given the variables noted above.  See additional specifics and details pertaining to the 2020 / 2021 winter season below.

Travel Program – 2020 / 2021 Season Update

Travel Leagues

Each of the youth basketball organizations / leagues (i.e. South Shore Boys & Girls leagues, Old Colony Girls League, etc.) is very interested in having a competitive winter season this year, and is working to secure gym time at a variety of local facilities, in case they are unable to use school gyms for games.  The leagues have already communicated their intention to push back the start of the season until January; additional clarity and specifics are expected from the leagues in the coming weeks.

PYB has not yet established a travel fee for the 2020 / 2021 season due to the current state of affairs, but anticipates a lower fee this year due to a variety of factors (i.e. shortened season, limited gym time / practice time, etc.).

In-Town Recreational Program – 2020 / 2021 Season Update

PYB is heavily reliant upon the use of Pembroke school gyms for the in-town recreational program (for practices & games).  The in-town recreational program typically starts in late December, so we have some additional time to prepare for the 2020 / 2021 season.  We are planning to open the registration process in early December and will publish additional information in the coming weeks, once we have clarity from the schools on gym availability.

PYB is doing everything that we can to help ensure we have a winter season and to provide a safe environment for the kids to play basketball.  We expect additional guidance and clarity in the coming weeks and will update this document as more information becomes available.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions.  We hope to see everyone on the courts soon.
