December 5th 2020 update on the 2020 / 2021 Winter Season

Pembroke Youth Basketball (“PYB”) is committed to doing everything possible to ensure that we have a winter basketball season for the kids.  This document is intended to help keep everyone informed on PYB activities related to the 2020 / 2021 winter season, and will be updated as more information becomes available.

On November 6, 2020, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (“MA EEA”) amended their youth sports guidance under phase III, step 2 of the Commonwealth’s re-opening plan.  The updated guidance was effective on November 7, 2020, and allows competitive basketball games to be played (subject to certain conditions – i.e. facial coverings, safety protocols, etc.).  Additionally, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (“MIAA”) recently issued their Rules Modifications & Guidelines for the Basketball 2020-21 Winter Season, which we expect all youth basketball leagues to adopt.

PYB is still not sure if we will be able to use the Pembroke school gyms for practices and games during the winter season, but we have secured gym time at some local facilities (i.e. Starland Sportsplex in Hanover, The Wolves Den in Pembroke, South Shore Sports Center in Hingham).  The gym time that we were able to secure, combined with the updated guidance noted above, has allowed PYB to move forward with all winter season planning activities, as summarized within this document.

The winter season offerings for the 2020 / 2021 season are slightly less than what we have been able to offer in past years due to the timing of the MA EEA guidance and limited gym availability.  These variables are out of PYB’s control and will result in a shortened season with limited practice time, but the kids will be able to play basketball.  PYB recognizes that these are challenging times and did everything possible to control costs; we were able to reduce fees by approximately 25% for each winter season option (see details below for each option).

Winter Season Options

PYB has two different options for the 2020 / 2021 winter season:

  • Travel program (boys & girls in grades 3 – 8)
  • In-Town Recreational program (boys & girls in grades 2 – 9)

Travel Program – 2020 / 2021 Season Update

General Update

Travel team tryouts were conducted in mid-November at The Wolves Den in Pembroke, and all team rosters were posted on the PYB web-site on November 24, 2020.  Travel team practices started the first week of December and will run through early March.

Each of the youth basketball organizations / leagues (i.e. South Shore Boys & Girls leagues, Old Colony Girls League, etc.) is committed to having a competitive winter season this year, and has secured gym time at a variety of local facilities for all league games (i.e Starland Sportsplex, The Wolves Den).  The leagues have already communicated their intention to push back the start of the season until January; game schedules and additional guidance is expected from the leagues in the coming weeks.

Registration Process for Travel Team Players

All travel team players must register via the PYB web-site.  The travel fee for the 2020 / 2021 season for each player is $235, which represents a decrease of approximately 25% from the prior year fee of $310.

In-Town Recreational Program – 2020 / 2021 Season Update

In-Town Program - Boys & Girls (2rd – 9th grade)

PYB is offering an 8-week season during January and February 2021 for boys and girls in grades 3 – 9.  Our goal is that each team will play 1 game per week. (no practices this year, due to limited gym availability).  Below is a tentative schedule:

- Games for all Boys Divisions and the Grade 2 Division will be held Saturdays (4:00 – 9:00 PM) or Sundays (6:00 – 8:00 PM) at the South Shore Sports Center in Hingham.  It is our expectation that the older grades will be at later times.

- Games for all Girls Divisions will be held on Tuesdays or Fridays (4:00 – 5:00 PM) at The Wolves Den
(*) the grades that apply to each of these divisions may shift depending on enrollment

Note:  due to limited gym availability, the specific days of the week / times noted above are subject to change; we may also need to shift what grades play in each division dependent on enrollment.

All in-town recreational players must register via the PYB web-site by December 30, 2020.  The in-town fee for the 2020 / 2021 season for each player is $65, which represents a decrease of approximately 25% from the prior year fee of $85.

PYB is doing everything that we can to help ensure we have a winter season and to provide a safe environment for the kids to play basketball.  We expect additional guidance and clarity in the coming weeks and will update this document as more information becomes available.  A copy of our COVID 19 Safety Measure can be found on our website. >>> [CLICK HERE]
